New Alpina to be launched at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2005, Alpina returns with new model based on the current 5-Series, the successor of the B10 becomes the B5. The engine comes from the Alpina’s B7& is a 4.4-Litre V8, with radial compressors bringing it up to 493Bhp. Thus the comfort-stressed alternative to the BMW M5 is able to accelerate in 4.7 seconds of zero on 60Mph and to reach a maximum speed of 186Mph (300 km/h). The B5 will be equipped with Switchtronic manipulation with a six-stage mechanism. In contrast to the M5 with its 10 cylinders this only has 8, but develops 516Ib ft of torque (M5 has 384Ib ft). The B5 is a more civilised car than the M5, mainly tailored for the North American market where its conventional automatic gearbox will be most appreciated. Assembled at the Dingolfing factory then sent to Alpina in Buchloe. Using the V8 block from the 745i, Alpina uses its own internals but keeps the BMW top end mechanicals Vanos Variable camshaft timing system, with adding a Radial Compressor (Supercharger & Turbo combination). The V8 gives a deep murmur & will effortlessly throw the 1720kg kerb weight with total disregard. It borrows the head-up display from the M5, which projects the information onto the front windscreen, & there is no supercharger whine. The ZF six-speed gearbox is strengthened in first & second gears, & a new torque converter added with reprogrammed software to accommodate the extra torque. Slightly softer suspension, than the M5s body roll is precise & excellent. It also doesn’t have the awful run-flat tyres & develops hardly any road noise. No limited slip differential at the moment, but will properly be added as an option later. Totally Bespoke, cancel that M5 & go for the gorgeous B5.
