La prima Porsche 911 fu lanciata nel mercato nel 1963. Dotata di un 2000 capace di 130 cv, 6 cilindri rigorosamente raffreddati ad aria, era l'erede della 356. La produzione però iniziò realmente soltanto nel settembre 1964. Inizialmente venduta come 901 in 82 esemplari, la denominazione modificò in 911 a causa di una lite con Peugeot.
