We saw what looked like an AMG version of the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL roadster weeks ago, but our latest spy photos reveal a few more details on the standard SL 550. Design changes up front include a revamped grille with a single blade of trim across the front while the headlights have a more rectangular design in place of the current model's twin ovals. Changes to the rear are minimal and don't expect big news under the hood either as the new 5.4-liter V8 is already putting out a healthy 382 horsepower.

Mercedes has decided to let the current SL, which is already 6 years old, live for several more years before the all new SL Class will come on the market. With a minor facelift over a year and a half ago, Mercedes feels it needs to freshen the looks one more time and hopefully keep up the good sales figures by giving the SL a major facelift next year.

While some of you poseur Mercedes fans might say, “Hey, the current generation R230 is already six years old, the next generation should be out, now!” However, the real hard core Mercedes dweebs will say, “but if you know your SL history the previous R129 generation was on the market for 12 years, and the one before that, was 16 years”. That's the equivalent of living 224 human years. However, with the dwindling attention spans of consumers, we can expect the next gen to not go quite as long with an arrival in 2011.

Seen in the attached photos, test cars have been sighted in many different locations of various climates such as cold weather testing in Scandinavia to the warm dusty roads of the Mediterranean.

The biggest change will be the CLS-style headlamps together with a new bumper and grille. Camouflage over the rear lamps is hiding a new shape and new diodes that are light emitting (LED).

Another feature already in the SLK that will finally come for the facelifted SL is the AIRSCARF, which is an air vent built into the headrest and blows warm air on your neck so you don't get cold when the top is down. How posh...

Engines are likely to remain the same as in the current model, but rumors are talking about a turbocharged version of the 350 engine with 354 bhp. Top of the line model will remain as the SL65 AMG with 612 bhp.

Come già anticipato, la Mercedes SL, lanciata 6 anni fa e già sottoposta ad un primo lieve restyling, dovrebbe cambiare aspetto il prossimo anno, in attesa della versione completamente rinnovata prevista non prima del 2011, considerando i "tempi lunghi" per questo particolare modello - 12 anni fu la "vita" della generazione precedente.

Se, però, nelle ricostruzioni virtuali già pubblicate, l'ispirazione stilistica per il prossimo face-lift sembrava quella della recente Classe C, ora alcune foto del prototipo mascherato pubblicate su World Car Fans mostrano alcuni elementi ispirati anche alla CLS, modello dalla forte -e talora anche discussa- personalità stilistica.

I fari anteriori, in particolare, ed una certa insistenza sui motivi ad arco sembrano elementi prelevati dalla "berlina-coupé" Mercedes; si notano inoltre le luci a led posteriori, ed anche la calandra con un evidente "baffo" cromato, comprendente la stella a tre punte, che se confermato costituirebbe un'inedita proposta stilistica. E' ancora presto, però, per avere risposte definitive: attendiamo immagini più esplicite...

Quanto al resto, non dovrebbero esserci significative differenze rispetto al modello attuale: i motori saranno più o meno gli stessi, a parte forse un aumento di potenza (354 CV) per la SL 350, e sarà disponibile il sistema di riscaldamento della... nuca Airscarf, già visto sulla nuova SLK.
