New Jeep Compass to rival Nissan Qashqai

Bosses have confirmed a mid-sized Jeep crossover, likely called Compass, will debut in early 2016

A new Jeep Compass crossover is on its way – and it’s penned for a big Geneva Motor Show reveal early next year.

The C-segment SUV is likely to revive the old Jeep Compass nameplate and is expected to rival models like the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Mazda CX-5. It’ll debut at the motor show before going on sale at the start of 2017.

Fitting between the new Renegade and existing Cherokee, the Compass will be the final model in Jeep’s rejuvenated product range. Having been declared bankruptcy as part of Chrysler in 2009, it’s been a long and tiresome struggle, but after enjoying 23 months of growth up to July 2015, the rough-and-ready SUV maker is undoubtedly on the up.

Expected to use the new 2.2-litre diesel engine from the Jeep Cherokee, the Compass will also be offered with a range of smaller petrols and less powerful diesels from the wider Fiat Group. The 1.4-litre turbo from the 500X is a likely candidate, as are the 1.6 and 2.0-litre diesels. Like the Cherokee, the Compass will also be offered with a choice of two or four-wheel drive, as well as manual and automatic gearboxes.

While there’s no information on further models, a company insider did insist there was no intention to diversify into smaller hatchbacks or more conventional saloon cars. That will remain part and parcel for Fiat and Alfa Romeo, but isn’t on the cards for 4x4-friendly Jeep.

We’ll get our first glimpse of the new Compass early next year, before a full reveal the Geneva show.
