Maserati eyes Alfa Romeo 4C

A Maserati version of the Alfa Romeo 4C sports car could be on the cards

Maserati could make its version of the Alfa Romeo 4C sports car, its CEO has admitted.

Maserati has already announced plans to sell 50,000 cars a year by 2015 following the launch at the Shanghai Motor Show of the Ghibli, a 5 Series rival featuring Ferarri's first diesel engine.

However Maserati boss Harald Wester admits the stylish 4C sports car from sister brand Alfa Romeo could also be part of plans.

When asked at the Shanghai show if Maserati could make a 4C, he replied: "It's a nice idea."

A production version of the Alfa Romeo 4C was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. It’s powered by what Alfa calls “an evolution of the engine in the Quadrifoglio Verde version of the Giulietta, but with an extra 5bhp taking the total to 237bhp. Power is delivered to the rear wheels via Alfa’s twin-clutch TCT transmission, controlled by paddles on the steering wheel.

The 0-62mph sprint takes 4.5 seconds, while top speed is ‘more than 250kph’ (155mph). Alfa’s DNA switch, which allows you to switch between different driving modes – Dynamic, Natural and All-Weather – has also been improved with a new Race mode that also activates a G-meter on the central display.

Prices for the 4C have yet to be announced although first deliveries begin in September 2013. A Maserati version of the 4C would of course carry a higher premium.

Small Maserati sports car looks increasingly likely, according to its chief

A new two-seater mid-engined Maserati sports car is looking increasingly likely and it could arrive by 2016, Auto Express can reveal.

Company boss Harald J Wester has previously mentioned the possibility of such a car. However, Giulio Pastore, Gengeral Manager for Maserati Europe has given the greatest hint yet of the vehicle’s pending arrival.

He said: “We don’t want to lose the identity of sportiness for Maserati. There will be the new GranCabrio and GranTurismo in 2015 and the year after that we are thinking of a new smaller sports car.”

It is widely acknowledged the car will be mid-engined, but Pastore revealed it would not be based on the Alfa 4C as has previously been speculated. He explained: “It would require us to create a more sporty, all-new body for Maserati.”

This new sports car would be a strict two-seater and be smaller in size to the next GranTurismo, which itself could shrink to become a two-plus-two-seater for improved dynamics.

Exactly where the car would sit in the range has yet to be confirmed. One thing is clear though – it will be the sportiest Maserati available as Pestore revealed the firm isn’t also planning to build a hypercar based on the Ferrari La Ferrari, in the same way it had the Enzo-based MC12.
