Stellantis’ SRT Performance Division Unveils Electric, Turbo-enhancing Technology Powertrain Concept: eBoost Air

August 6, 2026 , Auburn Hills, Mich. - Stellantis' SRT performance division reveals a new powertrain concept called eBoost Air. The new eBoost Air e-compressor technology is designed to address one of the core tradeoffs in turbocharged propulsion systems: how to deliver the high-power potential of large turbochargers while preserving throttle response. Paired with a prototype 3.0-liter Hurricane inline-six high-output engine, eBoost Air uses an e-compressor to spool the turbos off idle for immediate response. Once the engine reaches a higher rpm, the job is handed off to exhaust energy. The result is sustained forced induction (boost) across the rev range, virtually eliminating turbo lag.  

“Enthusiasts aren’t interested in technology for the sake of technology. But when technology improves performance with no downside, they’re all in,” said Tim Kuniskis, head of American brands and marketing, North America. “eBoost Air delivers exactly that kind of tangible benefit. It's a smart, simple idea that attacks turbo lag head-on and reflects what SRT does best—moving fast, challenging assumptions and chasing more performance.”

Traditional turbocharging increases power by forcing air into the engine. Turbos are powered by engine exhaust gases, which would normally be lost energy, making the technology very efficient. By capturing forced exhaust air to spool up the turbine, turbos create a forced induction system that reduces pumping losses and delivers more oxygen into the engine. The result is stronger combustion events for more power. With larger turbos, more air can be forced into the engine, creating more power. But with larger turbos, this process only works at higher rpms when the engine is producing substantial exhaust pressure. At lower rpms, the exhaust pressure is too weak to appropriately spool the turbos, commonly referred to as turbo lag. SRT’s eBoost Air e-compressor technology solves that problem by filling the rpm gap with positive pressure from a quick and powerful electric turbine, spooling the turbos much sooner to increase throttle response and acceleration.

“The SRT division is leveraging rapid development and cross-functional engineering to evaluate emerging performance technologies,” said Tom Sacoman, head of SRT operations. “In this case, by electromechanically pre-spooling the turbochargers before exhaust energy is available, we're able to significantly improve boost response and drivability.”

Positioned upstream of the exhaust-driven turbochargers, the e-compressor works with an electronically controlled bypass system. When the driver requests immediate torque and the turbos have not yet reached the required operating speed, the bypass system directs airflow through the e-compressor, which rapidly builds boost pressure to spool the turbines.

Once the turbochargers can provide the required boost, airflow returns to the normal induction path. For the driver, that means stronger response without waiting for the larger turbos to build boost and sustained power as engine speed climbs.

With a broad, responsive power band, eBoost Air more closely resembles the instant, linear feel of a supercharged V8. The system preserves the benefits of a turbocharged propulsion system while unlocking a new level of performance.

Just over a year after its return, Stellantis’ Street and Racing Technology (SRT) is reaffirming its role as the company's performance division and innovation incubator. The new eBoost Air e-compressor technology highlights SRT's rapid development capability for next-generation, high-performance propulsion systems.
