[updated with official confirmation] Porsche may have suspended deliveries of its new 911 GT3 due to a recent spate of car fires.

In one report, issued by a Swiss police agency, a GT3 driver exited off the highway after hearing strange noises coming from the engine area. He then noticed leaking oil and smoke before the car ignited.

With a total of five or more similar fires occurring in the past few weeks, the company is said to have ordered sales halt for any 2014 911 GT3 cars that are in dealer inventory, unnamed sources have toldAxis of Oversteer.

Another report from an Italian Porsche club suggests a brand-new GT3--just 60 kms on the odometer--ignited after the driver observed a low-oil pressure warning light on the dash. A Porsche engineer reportedly arrived from Stuttgart to inspect the burned vehicle.

The 2014 GT3 dropped its predecessor's "Mezger" racing engine in favor of the 911 Carrera S' powerplant, heavily modified with upgraded cylinder heads, new pistons, titanium connecting rods and a dry-sump lubrication system, among other changes. The tweaks enable the engine to achieve 475 horsepower, pushing the car to 60 mph in just 3.3 seconds and topping out at 196 mph.

[update:] Porsche has confirmed that it has asked dealers to stop selling the 911 GT3 until it can "analyze reports of engine problems in a very small number of vehicles."

Dopo due episodi di incendio, Porsche sta informando direttamente tutti i proprietari di 911 GT3 raccomandando loro di non usarle. "La società - spiega una nota stampa - si offre di prelevare le vetture e di portarle immediatamente presso un Centro Porsche". Porsche AG sta infatti effettuando il controllo di tutti i motori delle 911 GT3 dell'anno modello 2014 perchè per l'azienda "la sicurezza è una priorità". Le auto richiamate sono in tutto 785 e sono state consegnate in tutto il mondo. "Non c'è stato alcun incidente e nessuno è rimasto ferito", tiene a sottolineare l'azienda che puntualizza: le indagini interne per determinare la causa del danno al motore non sono state ancora completate. I risultati, assicurano da Stoccarda, saranno comunicati al più presto.

A vostro parere la GT3 è adatta esclusivamente alla pista oppure è fattibile guidarla anche in città come le altre 911?

Rispetto alle altre 911 è più bassa di 3 cm, quindi immagino sia abbastanza rigida e assettata, ma niente di estremo dunque?
