Ritorna la Lancer, ma su base Renault-Nissan:

A new Mitsubishi compact sedan based on a Renault-Nissan model may be sold in Europe to replace the company's disappointing Lancer.Mitsubishi and Renault-Nissan said on Nov. 5, 2013 that Mitsubishi will sell two new sedans based on Renault vehicles. One will be a midsize car to be sold in the United States and Canada. The second model is a compact sedan to be sold globally.

"We don't have any limitations [for the compact]. If there's a market for our vehicle we would like to sell there,” Mitsubishi CEO Osamu Masuko told Automotive News Europe.

Masuko said the partners are still discussing whether the new compact would be a rebadged Renault or Nisssan. Masuko said no decision has been made on where the compact will be produced.

[h=2]Will focus on SUVs[/h]Mitsubishi has announced they are not developing a successor for the aging Lancer.

Speaking to CarAdvice at the Geneva Motor Show, Mitsubishi Motors president and COO Tetsuro Aikawa said development of an all-new sedan is not being planned and the situation is unlikely to change while he's in charge. Instead, the available funds are being directed towards SUVs, plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles.

Another reason why they won't come up with a new Lancer is because Mitsubishi estimates that it would be hard for them to make a profit in such a competitive segment. Since there won't be a new Lancer, there obviously isn't going to be a successor to the highly desirable Evo which will be phased out in the near future, following one last final edition with 480 HP (353 kW).

There was a rumor last month about Mitsubishi's plans to restart negotiations with Nissan after the original plan fell through. The report stated both parties are working on a new sedan which in Mitsubishi's case would take the shape of a Lancer successor, but now it seems that won't happen after all.

Mitsubishi Motors North America executive vice president Don Swearingen has confirmed the company has begun working on the next-generation Lancer.Speaking to Wards Auto, Swearingen said Mitsubishi is still seeking a partner to help develop the vehicle but they can't wait any longer so they're also doing some development work on their own. As he explained, "We’re running parallel because we cannot wait any longer to see if a partnership will work out. If it falls through then we’re another year behind.”

The executive went on to say they are currently in talks with another automaker. Swearingen declined to elaborate but previous reports have suggested it might be Nissan.

Unfortunately, an all-new Lancer is still a ways off as Swearingen said that even if a deal was completed by the end of the year the model would still be at least 18 months to two years away.
