Hanover/Düsseldorf, 27 August 2026: At CARAVAN SALON 2026, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is presenting the ID. California Cruise, the first member of a new all-electric California family. Based on the ID. Buzz, the new vehicle brings the freedom, flexibility and everyday practicality of the California into the age of electric mobility. The ID. California Cruise marks the beginning: the family will be expanded step by step over the coming years, with further all-electric California models to be added by 2028. With prices starting from €60,761, the new model offers an attractive entry point into the electric California Welt.

Since its debut in 1988, the Volkswagen California has stood for compact campervan travel, excellent everyday usability and maximum freedom in the familiar Bulli format. Across several generations, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has repeatedly reinterpreted the California concept, from the classic campervan with a pop-up roof to particularly flexible Beach variants focused on a pared-back, versatile interior. As early as 2004, the California Beach concept demonstrated that the California idea is defined above all by flexibility, sleeping accommodation and the freedom to set off spontaneously, rather than by one particular roof design.

The ID. California Cruise builds on this approach as the first all-electric California based on the ID. Buzz.

The ID. Buzz provides the basis for the ID. California Cruise. Since its launch, markets, the media and camping enthusiasts have repeatedly expressed interest in a California version of the all-electric Bulli. With the ID. California Cruise, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is now providing its first concrete response.

For spontaneous trips, weekends away and longer road trips, the ID. California Cruise features specially developed camping equipment. Inside, it offers sleeping accommodation for two people, with a bed measuring 2.03 metres long and 1.20 metres wide. The exclusive sleeping system also includes a newly developed nine-centimetre-thick folding comfort mattress, designed to provide a particularly comfortable night’s sleep while travelling.

The equipment also includes ventilation grilles for the front side windows, blackout blinds for all windows, two camping chairs and a camping table. If the optional panoramic glass roof is specified, a matching blackout blind is included. All components can be stowed safely and compactly in the vehicle.

Distinctive visual features of the ID. California Cruise include exclusive seat covers in the “Miwo” design with an integrated California wordmark, California lettering at the rear and special “Cruise” decals along the sides of the vehicle.

Another new feature is the California mode developed specifically for camping. In the ID. California Cruise, an additional control unit enables selected lighting and comfort functions to be adjusted, supplies the USB ports with continuous power and prepares the interior for the night. The climate control can also heat or cool the interior as required, maintaining a comfortable sleeping temperature for an extended period of up to 48 hours continuously, depending on the battery’s state of charge and the difference between the interior and exterior temperatures.

To complement the move towards electrification, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is adding new electric-trip functions to the California App. For the first time, suitable charging stations along the route are displayed as part of journey planning. Owners of an ID. California Cruise, as well as future electrified California models, can therefore plan their trips in advance, including the necessary charging stops. The ID. California Cruise also supports Plug & Charge via the Volkswagen App: at compatible charging stations, charging starts automatically once the cable is connected, without the need for separate authentication at the charging point.

The vehicle-to-load function is particularly useful when camping. With a continuous output of up to 2,000 watts and a peak output of 3.6 kW, the ID. California Cruise becomes a mobile power source. Coffee machines, kettles, portable electric hobs, cool boxes, lighting systems and chargers for e-bikes and e-scooters can all be powered directly from the vehicle’s high-voltage battery. Mobile workstations and outdoor kitchens can also be supplied with power independently of an external electricity connection.

The ID. California Cruise is based on the ID. Buzz Pro and is available with either a short or long wheelbase. The base vehicle is complemented by additional standard equipment: the “Interior Style package”, the “Comfort package” and the “PowerSocket” discharge adapter for the vehicle-to-load function are always included.

The world premiere of the ID. California Cruise at CARAVAN SALON 2026 opens a new chapter for the California family. The ID. California Cruise combines the familiar strengths of the California with the possibilities of electric mobility and demonstrates how camping and electric travel can come together in the Bulli format. As the first all-electric California, it marks the start of a new model family with which Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is carrying the California success story into the electric age. First deliveries are scheduled for early 2027, making the electric California Welt a tangible reality in the near future.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles will showcase the entire California family at CARAVAN SALON 2026 in Hall 16 at Messe Düsseldorf from 28 August to 6 September 2026. Alongside the vehicles, visitors to the stand can find out more about the California Welt. This also includes the digital services available through the free California App, which already helps users plan their journeys and provides information on vehicle functions and camping equipment.

Non è proprio una California "vera" ma più che altro una ID. BUZZ con materassino, di più sicuramente non potevano fare per riuscire a stare sotto le 3.5 tonnellate vista la base di partenza di un veicolo elettrico che di per se è già pesante.
