At the beginning of the year we heard Sergio saying "we need to take weight out" and "we know we need to update the architecture" when talking about the next generation Jeep Wrangler set to come out in 2017 or later. Now, during the Fiat-Chrysler Investor Day press conference he said aluminum could be the way to go for the next-gen Wrangler.

Taking the aluminum route will shave off some considerable weight which could be further extended by replacing the full-size spare wheel with a smaller one positioned beneath the car. In addition, it is believed the fold-down windshield will be dropped while a power-retractable soft top will be optionally offered.

On a related note, Sergio Marchionne dismissed the possibility of aluminum-bodied Ram models even though Ford's new F-150 has received the Al treatment and could be followed by the next generations of the Explorer and Expedition.

“It’s a Jeep thing” might be a statement that select people at Fiat-Chrysler don’t understand—but let’s hope not.

As quoted by Automotive News, Jeep CEO Mike Manley says that the next-gen Wrangler, which is due in 2017, would need to compete with “soft” SUVs and that not all Wranglers need to be as capable off-road.

“You can’t sell 19,000-plus retail Wranglers [in May] to people who just want to go off-roading,” Manley told the industry paper. “Why would, for example, somebody else’s SUV that’s really an on-road ‘soft’ SUV not be for me a genuine target for Wrangler?” But before JK and TJ owners light effigies at the next Jeep Jamboree, Manley knows that the Wrangler enjoys a thick-as-blood fan base who are more loyal than the Secret Service. Later in the AN article, he states that “one thing that [Jeep] will not do is dilute what Wrangler stands for.”

As for the redesign, new powertrains and lighter materials are almost guaranteed. The Wrangler could benefit from more gears and, as we were told by Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne, possibly aluminum construction. Although the 2.8-liter diesel in European Wranglers performs well, Manley is on record saying that sales of the Grand Cherokee EcoDiesel need to improve before any new Jeep diesels arrive stateside. A four-cylinder gasoline model might make sense if Chrysler can sort an engine, possibly through turbocharging, that’s burlier than the 2.4 found in the new Cherokee.

But we’re not sure why the Wrangler—which is among the very best vehicles extant in terms of resale value—needs to target “soft” competitors when the new Renegade and the Cherokee provide plenty of ammo in that fight. To that end, Automotive News speculates that the Wrangler’s solid axles could be ripped out for a lighter independent setup.

We believe, however, that Fiat-Chrysler won’t ruin its very profitable icon, one that remains in high demand and which—like the Mercedes-Benz G-class—succeeds not in spite of its archaic technologies but because of them. Besides, if the company—which produces everything from LaFerraris to Dodge Darts—screws up the Wrangler, its executives from both sides of the Atlantic may need to use one to head for the hills.

In sostanza, il prossimo Wrangler dovrebbe avere caratterizzazioni più "soft" in materia fuoristradistica e potrebbe ricevere una carrozzeria in alluminio, oltre ad un motore diesel a 4 cilindri (il 2.4 Multijet?).

hai letto male. dice che potrebbe anche avere un diesel solo se le vendite del Grand Cherokee dimostrerà che ha mercato. e poi potrebbe anche avere un benzina 4 cil. ma probabilmente solo se sarà più vispo dell'attuale 2.4 del Cherokee.

Sì, però c'è da dire che certe normative impongono architetture strutturali diverse.

Comunque dalle dichiarazioni a me par di capire che forse ci saranno anche versioni in grado di competere con i SUV meno propensi allo sterrato.

sono loro che lo pensano...ma non stà scritto che il fuoristrada debba avere le indipendenti o fare i 20km/l o altre scemenze,dato che è un'icona e fino a prova contraria vende ancora bene perche stravolgerlo?lo facessero diventare un concorrente serio della G piuttosto

sono loro che lo pensano...ma non stà scritto che il fuoristrada debba avere le indipendenti o fare i 20km/l o altre scemenze,dato che è un'icona e fino a prova contraria vende ancora bene perche stravolgerlo?lo facessero diventare un concorrente serio della G piuttosto

ah beh, basta una stella a tre punte per il resto non ha niente ne fa niente di più del JK, al massimo il contrario.

Potrebbero fare anche una sospensione indipendente con differenziale flottante per renderlo comunque inarrivabile in fuoristrada e contemporaneamente rispettare le nuove norme di sicurezza e migliorare l'aerodinamica alle alte velocità (autostrada), ma purtroppo non lo faranno.

Sospensione indipendente tipo RAM 1500 davanti e solid axle dietro. Ormai è andata.

Toledo dorma sonni tranquilli, il balletto è solo per fargli sganciare anche incentivi e contributi, oltre al terreno gratuito per l'impianto. Marchionne è io migliore che ci sia in queste cose.
