sono solo mezzi commenti di dirigenti di Mazda Europe, ma secondo loro la NG non è imminente e che potrebbe anche non avere il 2.5 ma un aggiornamento dei motori attuali con ibridazione 😵

The MX-5 is especially fun, lightweight and affordable. If one of those three aspects is not there, then it is not an MX-5.

The ND generation is now twelve years old and it is still a perfect car. So, yeah, how do you make that better? That's hard. In 2024 we did a project where we started to look at what the possibilities are for the MX-5 NE. There's nothing stuck yet, but I'm sure that car will come and that there will be some form of electrical support in it. Mild hybrid will be the least. As I said, the MX-5 is the soul of the company. As you know, they are a bit crazy in Hiroshima, so there is something interesting coming out of that. But that will take a few more years.

The easiest way to reduce emissions from the MX-5 is to use synthetic fuels. That's actually the short answer. If you look at the technical reality, you can continue to use the existing fuel engine with synthetic, CO2-neutral fuel without having to change the entire concept of the car.

We try to continue with the current engines for as long as possible and optimize them in such a way that they comply with future regulations. That means technical adjustments, improvements in combustion, exhaust aftertreatment and efficiency. Whether that will be sufficient depends on how strict the final regulation becomes. But our starting point is clear: keep what is good and improve where necessary.

“While I can’t share with you exactly when the new MX-5 will arrive, I can tell you that we are working on it,” he said.

 

“We know that we need to make sure the fundamental concept of the MX-5 appeals to its fans, because this car is a brand icon.

 

“But global environmental regulations are getting tougher, as are safety protocols, which don’t (necessarily correlate) to a car that is designed for pure fun.

 

“I can tell you that we are sticking with (the design for) a car that will be under one tonne of weight … employing our ‘gram strategy’ as we did with the current series.”

 

Mr Osuga said that it was imperative each component of the MX-5 was optimised to reduce weight, ruling out electrification in its current form.

 

“I am not going to say there isn’t any possibility (that we will look at electrification in the future). But right now, that technology is very heavy, and if we apply that to the MX-5, we will not satisfy our fans,” he told GoAuto.

 

“Eventually, in the future, if the technology is there, then we will think about it. But at this moment, the internal combustion engine is the way (forward).”

Citano anche un articolo di un anno fa in cui il CTO di Mazda diceva che stanno studiando sia una NG elettrica/elettrificata, sia una ICE manuale e quest'ultima è sempre più leggera, quindi seguiranno quella strada. Quindi spiega che la NG sarà manuale e con lo Skyactiv Z 2.5 con un peso forse leggermente inferiore alla ND 2.0.
