Design

The front integrates the BMW radiator grille, twin headlights, and sensors into one unified visual element. A horizontal light signature stretches across most of the front, with two daytime running lights on each side that include turn indicators, updating BMW’s traditional “four-eye” face. An optional Iconic Glow feature adds contour lighting around the grille and can include dynamic lighting effects for extra visual impact. The BMW emblem sits above the grille in a sculpted bonnet “valley.” The front uses a shark-nose design, angled toward the road to emphasize the car’s sporty character.

The rear has athletic shoulders and flared wheel arches, emphasizing the car’s width and sporty stance. A diffuser element at the lower rear highlights the vehicle’s dynamic performance character. The rear lights run horizontally and have a 3D light signature, extending into the shoulders. Each side has two light elements forming a modern version of BMW’s classic L-shaped tail lights. The BMW emblem sits in a “valley” between the rear lights.

2.5-box design with distinctive surfaces, long wheelbase and short overhangs.

UX

The new BMW i3 introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive, a next-generation display and control system designed for intuitive, driver-focused interaction.

The system follows the principle: “the right information, in the right place at the right time.” A new BMW Panoramic Vision projects information across the lower windshield from A-pillar to A-pillar, keeping key driving data in the driver’s line of sight. It works with a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, an optional 3D head-up display, and a multifunction steering wheel with illuminated “Shy Tech” controls. Drivers can interact through touch, voice, and haptic controls, supported by the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which uses AI and large language models (with Amazon Alexa+ integration) for more natural voice commands. The system allows extensive personalization, with user profiles (BMW ID) for up to seven drivers, customizable widgets, and different My Modes such as Sport or Efficient. BMW Digital Key Plus lets smartphones or smartwatches unlock and start the car and share access securely. The system runs on BMW Operating System X, based on Android, allowing future updates, upgrades, and new digital services.

System Architecture

The BMW i3 introduces a new software and electronics architecture centered on powerful computing and flexible updates.

The car uses four “superbrain” high-performance computers, each responsible for a main function:

Driving dynamics (“Heart of Joy”)

Automated driving and parking

Infotainment

Core vehicle and comfort systems (access, climate control)

These computers provide up to 20× more computing power than previous BMW systems. A four-zone electronics architecture simplifies wiring, reduces cable length and weight, and improves energy efficiency. Smart electronic fuses (eFuses) replace traditional fuses to manage power more intelligently. Over-the-air software updates allow the car to gain new features, performance improvements, and AI capabilities after purchase.

Driving Experience

The BMW i3 offers a next-level driving experience through advanced computing, suspension, and driver-assistance systems.

Heart of Joy: One of four superbrains, controlling drive, brakes, steering, charging, and recuperation. It is 10× faster than previous systems, providing precise, responsive handling and reducing unnecessary interventions.

Soft-Stop: Enables exceptionally smooth deceleration, relying mainly on regenerative braking for everyday driving.

Suspension: Combines sporty dynamics with comfort, featuring stroke-dependent shock absorbers, a two-joint front strut, five-link rear axle, and optional adaptive M suspension for enhanced performance.

BMW Symbiotic Drive: Ensures seamless interaction between the driver and Level 2 driver assistance systems. The driver remains in control while assisted systems operate intuitively, including lane-keeping, collision warnings, and adaptive cruise.

Driving Assistant Plus: Automates speed and distance control, lane guidance, and adapts to curves, roundabouts, and speed limits for stress-free driving.

Battery and Drivetrain

The BMW i3 features a sixth-generation electric drive with advanced battery and motor technology, representing a technological leap in BMW’s electrification.

High-voltage battery with round cells:

Uses lithium-ion round cells (46 mm × 95 mm) for 20% higher energy density than previous prismatic cells.

Cell-to-pack design integrates cells directly into the battery, saving weight and allowing a flat battery layout.

Pack-to-open-body construction makes the battery a structural element, reducing weight and improving torsional rigidity.

Energy Master: The intelligent control centre manages power distribution, safety, and efficiency of the battery and vehicle electronics.

Electric motors:

Rear EESM (electrically excited synchronous motor): High efficiency, flexible magnetic field, consistent power and high torque.

Front ASM (asynchronous motor): Lightweight, robust, induction-based, complements the EESM.

Combined system output: 345 kW / 469 hp with 645 Nm torque.

Together, they reduce energy losses by 40%, drive system weight by 10%, and manufacturing costs by 20% compared to the previous generation.

Performance improvements:

Longer range (up to ~900 km WLTP provisional).

Faster charging (up to 400 kW DC) with bidirectional charging capability.

Efficient design improves aerodynamics and driving dynamics.

Battery Charging

The BMW i3 offers revolutionary charging and energy management, building on sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology.

Ultra-fast charging:

800 V architecture enables up to 400 kW DC charging, adding up to 400 km range in 10 minutes (BMW i3 50 xDrive, provisional WLTP).

AC charging up to 22 kW.

Battery pre-conditioning optimizes DC charging speed.

Bidirectional charging:

Vehicle-to-Load (V2L): Acts as a mobile power bank for devices (e.g., e-bikes, appliances).

Vehicle-to-Home (V2H): Powers household appliances, works with photovoltaic systems to reduce energy costs.

Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G): Feeds energy back into the public grid for potential earnings.

Intelligent, convenient charging experience:

AI-optimized route planning with charging stops via BMW Maps or My BMW App.

Plug & Charge for automatic authentication.

Intelligent charging flap opens automatically when approaching a charging point.

Innovative charging products:

BMW Wallbox Professional (DC): Supports V2H/V2G, up to 11–19.2 kW depending on market.

BMW Multifunction Charger (MFC): Flexible for home, public, and bidirectional charging; includes adapters for various power sources.

Sustainability

The new BMW i3 follows a holistic sustainability approach across its life cycle, focusing on CO₂e reduction, resource conservation, and circularity.

Rapid CO₂e benefits:

The i3 50 xDrive achieves a CO₂e advantage over comparable ICE vehicles within 1–2 years of use.

Decarbonization in the supply chain:

Use of renewable energy, secondary materials, and innovative processes reduced supply chain CO₂e by ~33% during development.

Innovative, recyclable materials:

“Design for Circularity”: enhanced recyclability and simplified material variety.

Front bumper: 30% recycled plastic, reduced material types from 15 → 7, ~85% recyclable plastics.

Essential Econeer seat covers: 100% recycled polyester, easier dismantling for end-of-life separation.

Secondary materials in key components:

Aluminum cast components: 70–80% recycled.

Gen6 battery cells: cobalt, lithium, nickel partially from secondary sources.

Other parts use recycled marine plastics (e.g., engine compartment, storage compartments) and 100% recycled textiles (headliner, A-pillar).

Improved operational efficiency:

EfficientDynamics technology optimizes aerodynamics, lightweight construction, rolling resistance, and energy management.
