Kia unveils the new Niro, strengthening its electrification ecosystem in Europe

  • A refreshed, hybrid-only CUV designed to make everyday mobility easier, combining crossover versatility with high efficiency and enhanced connectivity

  • Updated exterior design introduces distinctive vertical signature lighting, while the interior gains a 12.3-inch dual panoramic display powered by Kia’s ccNC infotainment system

  • Expanded ADAS offering with a higher level of standard features ensures outstanding safety performance

  • More than 620,000 Niro units sold in Europe, highlighting strong demand driven by its blend of practicality, comfort, and safety

Kia Europe has unveiled the new Niro, a refreshed hybrid CUV designed to simplify everyday mobility through efficient hybrid technology, practical crossover packaging, and enhanced connectivity. The updated model introduces a hybrid-only powertrain strategy for the European market, positioning the new Niro as the most accessible entry point into electrified mobility. By combining hybrid efficiency with familiar driving characteristics, the model provides a practical and accessible solution for everyday mobility needs. With a focus on usability, safety, and technology, the new Niro reinforces its role within the highly competitive CUV hybrid segment, where demand for efficient vehicles continues to grow.

“Hybrid technology continues to play an important role in delivering efficient, low-emission mobility solutions across Europe. The new Kia Niro provides a practical solution for customers who want to reduce emissions while maintaining the flexibility and familiarity of conventional driving,” said Pablo Martinez Masip, Vice President Product, Marketing & Customer Experience at Kia Europe. “By combining efficient hybrid performance, intuitive connectivity, and comprehensive safety technology, the new Niro is designed to support everyday life in a way that is simple, reliable, and responsible.”

The Niro, a successful story in Europe

The Niro has quickly established itself as another Kia success story in Europe. Since its launch, the model has been positioned as an accessible and practical entry point into electrified mobility, which responds to the diverse needs of European customers. Beyond its powertrains, the Niro has been widely praised for delivering on the core attributes that matter most to European customers. Its elevated driving position, generous interior space, and practical design ensure comfort and usability in everyday driving scenarios, while a comprehensive suite of safety features enhances driver confidence.

Another key factor behind the Niro’s success has been its flexible powertrain strategy. By offering hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric variants, Kia enabled customers to transition to electrification at their own pace. This flexibility has been particularly valued in Europe, where charging infrastructure differs between countries. This strategy is reflected in Niro’s strong retail performance. Since its European launch, the model has sold 620,000 units, with the hybrid variant emerging as the best-selling version.

Efficient hybrid powertrain for everyday driving

Accordingly, the facelifted Niro is equipped exclusively with a modern hybrid powertrain, which combines a 1.6-litre GDI direct injection petrol engine with an electric motor. The system integrates a 75-kW combustion engine and a 32-kW electric motor, delivering a combined output of 138 PS and driving the front wheels via a responsive six-speed dual-clutch transmission (6 DCT). This configuration has been specially developed to facilitate responsible driving in everyday use while offering the familiar range and comfort of conventional drive systems. In addition, the model achieves a maximum speed of 170 km/h and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.3 seconds.

Practical crossover proportions and updated exterior design

The new Niro introduces a series of exterior updates designed to align the model with Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy while maintaining its distinctive crossover identity. The refreshed design focuses on visual clarity, improved lighting technology, and practical proportions suited to everyday mobility, while giving the new Kia Niro a more modern and purposeful aesthetic.

Redesigned front and rear bumpers give the car a sharper, more confident appearance and a stronger road presence.

At the front, the headlamps now adopt a vertical orientation, aligning with Kia’s Opposites United design philosophy and reinforcing a more distinctive and cohesive visual identity. These standard LED headlights with Multi-Faceted Reflector (MFR) technology not only provide a high-quality look but also improve light distribution for greater safety in everyday use.

At the rear, a fully redesigned tailgate works in harmony with a new light signature: the license plate pocket has been removed to create a cleaner, more minimal surface, enhancing the vehicle’s perceived width and premium appeal. Updated lighting graphics further strengthen the model’s modern design language and ensure greater consistency with the front.

With a length of 4,430 millimetres and a wheelbase of 2,720 millimetres, the new Niro offers generous space in the compact CUV segment. The luggage compartment offers 430 litres of cargo capacity (VDA), while a towing capacity of up to 1,010 kilogrammes (braked) allows the vehicle to support a variety of leisure and utility needs.

Aerodynamic efficiency is optimised with a drag coefficient of 0.28, with customers able to choose between proven 16-inch alloy wheels and newly designed 18-inch variants for higher trim levels.

Redesigned interior and connected cockpit

Inside the cabin, interior materials and colour combinations have also been updated to provide a more contemporary cabin environment. Additionally, the new Niro introduces a redesigned dashboard and centre console architecture designed around a 12.3-inch connected cockpit navigation (ccNC) infotainment system. The new interface integrates navigation, vehicle functions and connectivity services into a single digital environment.

Key technology features include:

  • 12.3-inch infotainment and instrument cluster display

  • Over-the-Air (OTA) updates for navigation and software

  • Digital Key 2.0 smartphone access

  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

  • Head-Up Display (HUD)

  • Wireless smartphone charging

Expanded safety and driver assistance technology

The new Niro offers a comprehensive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) package from entry level trim, expanding its safety offering. Key safety technologies include:

  • Forward Collision Avoidance Assist (FCA 1.5): camera and radar-based system capable of detecting vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists

  • Highway Driving Assist (HDA 2.0): combining adaptive cruise control with lane-centring functionality for assisted highway driving

  • Lane Following Assist (LFA 2): helps maintain the vehicle within its lane

  • Blind-Spot Collision Avoidance Assist (BCA): rear corner radar sensors detect vehicles in the driver’s blind spot when a turn signal is activated, steering or braking to prevent collisions

  • Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA): uses front-mounted camera and navigation data to identify speed limit signs and maintain the vehicle’s speed accordingly

  • Parking Distance Warning (PDW; forward and reverse): ultrasonic sensors detect obstacles and alert the driver when manoeuvring at low speeds

  • Rear View Monitor (RVM): displays the area behind the vehicle on the infotainment screen during parking and reversing

The vehicle also introduces Hands-On Detection (HOD) via a capacitive steering wheel, which confirms driver engagement when using assisted driving features.

Together, these systems support safer everyday driving by assisting the driver in maintaining lane position, monitoring surrounding traffic, and responding to potential hazards. The vehicle’s advanced sensor suite also enables convenient features such as Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA).
