Il 1595cm3 Audi deriva dal 1781cm3, il glorioso 1.8 della casa dei quattro anelli che deriva dai 4 cilindri che l'Auto Union/Audi produceva per la Mercedes-Benz.

In realta' la famiglia dei 4L VW deriva dai 4L 1.6 NSU della K70, da cui deriva poi anche il pianale B1 della prima Audi80 ( e VW Passat )

A sua volta il 4L 1.6 NSU deriva ( con l'aggiunta del raffreddamento ad acqua ) dal 1.2 4L della Prinz 4 TT.

La VW dalla Daimler-Benz ha comprato solo il marchio:

Nel 1958 Auto Union GmbH viene acquistata da Daimler-Benz (Mercedes), che sei anni dopo cede il glorioso marchio a Volkswagen. La casa di Wolfsburg nel 1965 fa rinascere Audi, identificata da quattro anelli, simbolo delle altrettante marche che negli anni Trenta avevano dato vita ad Auto Union.
