'Evolved' 2014 Cherokee more road-friendly, efficient than predecessors

Automotive News

September 10, 2013 - 8:57 pm ET

LOS ANGELES -- Evolution is the best word to explain the relationship between the 2014 Jeep Cherokee and the vehicles it replaced: the Jeep Liberty that ended production in 2012 and the boxy "XJ" Cherokee last built in 2001.

Both the 2014 Cherokee and the mid-sized SUV segment as a whole have advanced over the last dozen years well beyond what either the original XJ Cherokee or the Liberty were designed for: lightweight, rugged off-roading that could also serve as a daily driver.

So while the first Jeep to be designed by Chrysler Group on a Fiat platform, the 2014 Cherokee, shares a name and an ancestry with the Liberty and XJ Cherokee, everything else about the vehicle has evolved.

Off-road model: The 2014 Cherokee will be available in four trim levels: Sport, Latitude, Limited and a trail-rated Trailhawk trim that also adds an inch of ground clearance and features Jeep's ActiveDrive Lock off-road system. It will be offered in 11 colors.

Off-road, the 2014 Cherokee's trail-rated Trailhawk version holds its own against its highly capable ancestor, and bests anything else in the segment. Lower trim levels, which don't carry Jeep's trail-rated badging, aren't meant for more than light off-road use.

The Trailhawk version employs advanced electronic drivetrain technology to traverse nearly any terrain one could throw at it, albeit at sometimes odd driving angles thanks to its independent front and rear suspensions.

Unlike the Wrangler -- whose solid axles can articulate across uneven terrain while the body stays more or less flat -- the Cherokee bounces and climbs as much as its independent front and rear suspensions will travel. But even with one wheel occasionally in the air, the Trailhawk's powertrain provides more than ample traction and sure-footedness to cross most obstacles.

On-road manners: On-road, all of the trim levels of the 2014 Cherokee are quieter, more powerful, more efficient, more technologically advanced and more luxurious in every way than either the last Cherokee or the Jeep Liberty it replaced. They are also competitive in every way to the Honda CR-Vs, Toyota Rav4s and Ford Escapes that now dominate the mid-sized SUV segment.

Complex powertrain: The five-passenger Cherokee is a complex vehicle, with two new engines, a new 9-speed front-wheel-drive automatic transmission and a new drivetrain system that comes in four different configurations across its four trim levels. That complexity is the reason executives cited as to why the vehicles, which entered production June 24, are not yet in dealerships. They are expected to ship this month after undergoing a software update.

Consumers will chose between a standard 2.4-liter I-4 engine with Fiat's Multiair II variable valve timing technology and an optional 3.2-liter V-6. The four-cylinder produces 184 hp and 171 pounds-feet of torque, while the V-6 delivers 271 hp and 239 pounds-feet of torque.

Those who opt for the louder, less refined four cylinder engine will miss the V-6's much more powerful feel and responsiveness, but will gain added fuel economy. Front-wheel drive versions with the 2.4 have been rated at 22 city/31 highway/25 combined, while the same Cherokee with the 3.2-liter V-6 is rated at 19 city/28 highway/22 combined.

All models domestically will come with a 9-speed automatic transmission designed by ZF Friedrichshafen. A manual transmission will only be available in models sold overseas.

Refined interior: Where the 2014 Cherokee really excels is inside the cabin. The Cherokee employs the same 8.4-inch center stack infotainment system as the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee, as well as a 7-inch configurable screen in the instrument cluster.

Like the Dart, the Cherokee features a large glove box capable of securely storing most laptop or tablet computers. A hidden storage compartment beneath the passenger seat was also brought over from the Dart. The center console hosts ports for USB and SD media, and an integrated phone docking station. A latching bin is incorporated above the center stack.

Front-row seating is comfortable and supportive, while the back row is comfortable but narrow, much like the previous generation Cherokee or the Liberty.

The rear cargo area is almost 50 cubic feet. A cargo management system for the rear is optional, though a rack with hooks is standard.

Secondo me con i fari cecati sta peggio... pare che li abbia rotti. E va beh, il mercato chiede cose cretine...

There's no replacement for displacement.

Sono d'accordo con te. Come la nuova Rav4 sembra un SUV di due generazioni fa'. Niente a che vedere con il nuovo X-Trail e con il sempreverde Freelander (pur rovinato dai 1000 restyling).
