Una Peugeot L45 Grand Prix del 1914 è stata venduta per 7,26 milioni di dollari ad una recente asta di Bonhams a Los Angeles.

 

Per gran parte del secolo scorso si è pensato che questa iconica Peugeot, venduta per l’equivalente di oltre 6,2 milioni di euro, avesse condotto Dario Resta alla vittoria nella 500 Miglia di Indianapolis del 1916. Invece recentemente è stato confermato che si tratta della vettura che, nella stessa competizione venne guidata da Ralph Mulford, che si classificò terzo.

Nei primi anni del ‘900, le Case automobilistiche francesi dominavano la scena del motorsport e nel 1913 Jules Goux vinse la 500 Miglia di Indianapolis, che a quell’anno era alla sua terza edizione, con una Peugeot molto simile a questa.

La Peugeot L45 Grand Prix in questione ha gareggiato nel 1916 con un motore 3.0 litri, ma più avanti venne  dotata di motore con doppio albero a camme in testa e quattro valvole per cilibndro da 4.5 litri che sviluppa 112 CV a 2.800 giri al minuto. La vettura monta anche i freni a tamburo meccanici ai quattro angoli, le sospensioni a balestra semiellittiche e gli assali anteriori e posteriori.

THE BOTHWELL PEUGEOT

In a dual overhead camshaft engine, the cams operate on inclined valve stems directly or through interposed cam followers. The intake and exhaust valves are disposed through an intermediate angle that minimizes intake and exhaust flow restrictions. Combustion chamber shape can be tailored to fuel quality, spark plug position and combustion propagation. It is the accepted standard for extracting performance and economy in internal combustion engines. Today virtually every racing engine uses dual overhead camshafts. At the other end of the internal combustion engine spectrum, high efficiency road engines, even hybrids, use them to maximize recovery of the innate energy of hydrocarbon fuels.
