It seems that GM has found the best solution to improve fuel economy: small engines with turbochargers. Starting 2009, the company will introduce a turbocharged 1.4-liter gasoline engine (ecotec family 0-1 ?)for small U.S. cars. First to use this engine are the Chevrolet Cobalt and Saturn Astra. Same engine could be used in mid-sized vehicles, too.

"You’re going to see turbocharged four-cylinders in vehicles that no one could have ever imagined that they would be in," said GM engineering chief Jim Queen.

Queen did not indicate where the engines would be made or predict their fuel economy.

The 2008 Cobalt powered by a 2.2-liter engine gets 33 mpg highway and 24 city. The smallest GM model in the States is the Korean-built Chevrolet Aveo that is powered by a 1.6-liter. The Saturn Astra is powered by a 1.8-liter engine.

Turbochargers could cost GM $200 to $450 per vehicle depending on the system’s sophistication, said Jim Hall, director of industry analysis at 2953 Analytics in suburban Detroit.

Resterebberò sul mercato per le subcompact e sportive di piccole dimensioni l'ecotec 2.4 e l'ecotec 2.0 turbo che sostituirà il 2.0 ecotec a compressore meccanico. Dimezzata la famiglia ECOTEC II in pratica, in attesa di capire la provenienza del 1.4 litri turbo.

Veniale curiosità. Il possibile pensionamento di un ottimo motore dopo una lunghisima carriera ( 7 o 8 anni) e i suoi grandi numeri di produzione, indubbi in USA, può essere notizia da prima pagina

Appena arriverà il 1.8 JTB da 190cv il 2.2 JTS non servirà + neanche all'Alfa!!

Questa cosa accadrà PRIMA della fine del 2008!!

sicuramente adatto alle esigenze delle subcompact USA

Per le subcompact, gli yankees preferiscono la cubatura 2.4 di tale motore...
