Loeb: “La vita è crudele”

“La vita e questo sport possono essere crudeli a volte e questo è uno di quei casi per la tua famiglia, per il WRC e per tutto il motorsport. Riposa in pace Craig”, le parole di Sebastien Loeb. Nato il 2 febbraio 1990, Breen aveva esordito nel WRC nel 2009. Laureatosi campione WRC Academy e S-WRC rispettivamente nel 2011 e nel 2012, l’irlandese non è invece riuscito ad affermarsi nella massima categoria, sia in singoli rally che in campionato. In tutto ciò, il 33enne ha comunque conquistato otto podi totali, l’ultimo dei quali ottenuto in Svezia proprio quest’anno, dove aveva concluso al 2° posto. Nel corso della sua carriera ha rivestito il ruolo di pilota ufficiale per Citroën, Ford e Hyundai.

“Hyundai Motorsport conferma che parteciperà alla quarta prova del FIA World Rally Championship, il Rally di Croazia, con due vetture, dopo l’incidente nei test pre-gara in cui ha perso la vita Craig Breen – si legge nel comunicato diramato dalla casa sud-coreana – la decisione di partecipare è stata presa dopo un’attenta valutazione, che ha incluso discussioni con la famiglia di Craig, con il suo copilota James e con gli equipaggi e i membri del team Hyundai Motorsport. La sua famiglia e James hanno confermato il desiderio che la squadra gareggi in Croazia in onore di Craig”.

 

Le parole del team principal Cyril Abiteboul

“Dopo un’attenta valutazione che ha coinvolto tutte le parti interessate, abbiamo deciso di partecipare al Rally di Croazia. Lo faremo in memoria di Craig, per onorare lui, la sua passione per i rally e il suo spirito votato alla competizione. Iscriveremo due vetture e ritireremo la terza in segno di rispetto. Entrambe le vetture correranno con una livrea speciale per Craig, la sua famiglia, i suoi amici e i suoi tifosi. Parlando con tutti è emerso chiaramente che il modo migliore per onorare l’eredità di Craig non era quello di ritirare la nostra iscrizione, quindi parteciperemo in sua memoria”.

I due equipaggi della Hyundai i20 N Rally1 Hybrid saranno Thierry/Martijn ed Esapekka/Janne. La livrea riprenderà i colori dell’Irlanda, dunque l’arancione, il bianco e il verde.

Statement from Hyundai Motorsport Team Principal Cyril Abiteboul

Craig was laid to rest yesterday and it’s been a very emotional time for all of us.

Craig was laid to rest yesterday and it’s been a very emotional time for all of us. Emotions are still raw and there has been an amazing outpouring of grief for Craig, who was an incredible person to know, as a team-mate, competitor and friend.

Regarding the accident, we can say that Craig was participating in the pre-event test in Croatia. Road conditions were slippery and the car slid off the road at a relatively low speed and made contact with a wooden fence. A post from this fence intruded into the cabin through the driver’s side window.

The stage was closed immediately and the on stage medical team was rapidly on the scene.

We must mention that James Fulton was unhurt in the crash and our hearts go out to him. We are doing everything we can to support James at this time.

Craig was taken to hospital from the stage. As far as can be determined, Craig’s passing was instantaneous.

Hyundai Motorsport and the FIA are working together to review all aspects of the incident. As far as can be ascertained, there was no issue with any element of the car, the tyres or the safety equipment. The local police completed a report at the scene.

Moving to this weekend and Croatia Rally, it was clear from the feedback from all stakeholders, and Craig’s family and friends, that the competitive spirit of Craig would have wanted this weekend’s rally to continue and for his team-mates to participate.

We thought long and hard about how to do this and how best to honour Craig. To this end, we are contesting the event with two cars, both running with a special livery to honour Craig, his Irish roots and his beloved Irish rally community.

Craig was a wonderful person and that is true of his family and friends. The rallying community has really pulled together and it’s a mark of the high regard with which Craig was held.

There are a number of initiatives to honour Craig taking place over this weekend. As well as our special livery we have a book of condolence in our hospitality unit that everyone is invited to sign. This will be shared with the family.

This is all we have to say collectively at this stage.
